I can't save the game.
« on: January 28, 2014, 06:52:56 AM »
I have the full version of CTC and have paid, received, and installed the codes for the 4 territories:

United States Conrail Dearborn Berea Ohio - Toledo Ohio 1996
United States Conrail Dearborn Elkhart Indiana - Toledo Ohio 1996
BNSF Alliance East
Toledo Terminal

It's a Windows 7 PC 64 bit

According to the manual:

"Save Current Game: Saves the current game status into a file which you can load later with the Load Saved Game option to resume this current game. Opens a dialog box asking you to specify a file where you want to save it to. Note: This option may not be available for all territory versions."

When I hit "Save Current Game" in File menu it opens a window that displays the CTC foolder with the game itself and the territories and so on. The window wants me to chose a file to open. It is not a " dialog box asking you to specify a file where you want to save it to."

Please ask if you need more information.

The File menu opens a folder which you have used previously to save and load games before - if you haven't done this before you get a default folder.

Within it you can navigate to a different folder - and even create one (which we recommend). In the Filename field you can specify the file name you want to save it to - you can also select an existing file to overwrite.

But you have a point - it should say "save" and not "open". But other than that, it should work as described above.

See attachment with the highlighted fields to look for.

Please let me know if you have problems with saving the game itself.

Thank you for answering.

I have attached a screenshot showing what pops up when I click "Save Current Game". It doesn't seem to create a file that can be saved. Perhaps it doesn't work properly in Windows 7 64 bit?

You still need to enter a filename (your choice) in the field as indicated. Have you tried it?

I have replaced the OpenFileDialog with SaveFileDialog and the result is also shown below. As you can see it says "Save As" in the title bar, in the folder section it says "Save In", the "Open" button has changed to "Save", and a another change to "Save as type" which we don't use. Some textual changes but otherwise the same.

Both dialogs work more or less the same. The fact that they are so similar can make one miss the mistake of using the wrong dialog. The dialogs are used only to select a file, not to actually read or write them.

On your screenshot I can't make out an icon with which you can create a new folder. That might be a difference for W7 and you may have to create it in a different way (just checked the internet: there seems to be a problem with W7 regarding folder creation, even for an administrator :();

In the next release of CTC, we will have the dialog changed, but the functionality will remain the same - most likely.

I have solved the problem!  8)

The problem was that I, as (only a) 'user' of my own PC did not have the full rights to create folders, saving files and such. I created a folder called CTCsaves, right-clicked on it selected the third tab and found a way to grant myself full rights to this folder. Silly... is it not?

But now the saving function works.

If other users with W7 get this problem. There IS a way around it.

Only a user - and probably the only one - on your own PC? That puts your ego down in size, doesn't it.

Anyway, great that it is working for you now.

Since there is nothing about it in the user manual, I think I will add a sentence or two about access rights to such folders. We cannot address every aspect of every Windows flavor there or how to deal with it - after all it is a manual for CTC, not for Windows - but at least we can make aware of issues like this. Anything beyond that can be discussed in this forum - we have created that for a reason.
